Silvergrass Mine

Silvergrass is situated within the West Pilbara Mineral Field, embedded in one of Earth's most geologically ancient and operationally hostile landscapes. The site operates under extreme arid conditions — annual rainfall below 300 mm, ambient temperatures routinely exceeding 45°C, and persistent dust events. Water supply infrastructure is mission-critical: bore-field extraction and managed reticulation systems underpin every operational function, from dust suppression on haul roads to camp potable supply. Terrain is characterised by low-relief ironstone ridges and spinifex plains typical of the Hamersley Basin.

Silvergrass operates as an active production node within Rio Tinto's integrated Pilbara iron ore system, feeding directly into the Brockman 2 / Nammuldi hub complex. The FIFO workforce model creates acute, recurring demand for local mechanical workshop services — hydraulic repair, tyre management, GET (Ground Engaging Tools) supply, and heavy mobile equipment (HME) breakdown response. Unplanned downtime on 240-tonne class haul trucks carries direct cost exposure exceeding AUD $10,000/hour. Preferred vendor pre-qualification through Rio Tinto's procurement channels is mandatory.

Ore extraction follows a conventional drill-blast-load-haul cycle targeting Brockman Iron Formation deposits. Crushed and screened product is transferred via an extensive conveyor belt network — a multi-kilometre system integrating transfer stations, dust-suppression enclosures, and variable-speed drives — connecting the pit to the Nammuldi processing and rail-load-out facility. Conveyor system integrity is a primary engineering KPI; idler replacement cycles, belt tension monitoring, and gearbox thermal management are continuous maintenance obligations requiring specialist OEM-certified technicians on standby.

Rio Tinto enforces a proactive rehabilitation mandate across all Pilbara operations, including Silvergrass. Progressive landform reconstruction and native seed propagation programs run concurrently with active mining. Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are engineered to ANCOLD guidelines with real-time piezometric monitoring and annual independent audits. Water recycling from TSF decant streams reduces freshwater draw. Scope 1 and 2 emissions reporting is integrated into Rio Tinto's group-level climate disclosure under TCFD alignment, with site-level targets cascaded to contractor ESG compliance obligations.
