Project Logistics & B2B Overview
Geographic Location and Topography
The Thunderbox gold operation is situated approximately 45 km southeast of Leinster in Western Australia's Goldfields-Esperance region — one of the continent's most hydrologically stressed arid zones. Annual rainfall is minimal and evaporation rates are extreme, making engineered water supply infrastructure — including dedicated bore fields and water recycling circuits — operationally non-negotiable. Dust suppression, heat management, and potable water logistics are persistent site-level constraints that directly condition procurement strategy and contractor capability requirements.
B2B Lifecycle and Operations
Thunderbox is an actively producing dual-method operation demanding a broad vendor ecosystem:
- Underground extractive services: contract mining (development and production), long-hole drilling, explosives supply, ground support systems, paste fill supply and placement, ventilation management
- Open pit extractive services: bulk earthmoving, production drilling and blasting, excavator and rear-dump truck fleet maintenance, satellite pit ore haulage
- Processing services: reagent supply (cyanide, lime, flocculants), mill liner replacement, elution and gold room maintenance, thickener and CIL circuit servicing
- Workforce logistics: FIFO rotation management, on-site catering, camp facilities maintenance, airstrip ground handling
- On-site mechanical workshops are critical — remote location makes rapid equipment turnaround essential to avoid costly unplanned downtime across both mining fronts
Extraction Engineering and Infrastructure
The underground operation employs long-hole open stoping adapted to variable ore-zone widths, with paste fill deployed to maximise reserve recovery and maintain stope stability at depth. Surface operations use conventional truck-and-excavator bulk methods across the main pit and satellite deposits. The processing circuit incorporates primary grinding, classification, CIL leaching, and elution/gold recovery stages. On-site dual-fuel power generation supports continuous operations. The physicochemical demands of the CIL circuit — precise reagent dosing, pH control, activated carbon management — define a high-specification consumables and maintenance supply requirement.
ESG, Value Chain and Sustainability
Environmental management is aligned with ISO 14001:2015 standards, with particular emphasis on:
- Tailings storage facility integrity — paste fill reuse reduces surface tailings volume while progressive rehabilitation addresses disturbed landforms continuously
- Water efficiency — bore field management and process water recycling are central to the site's licence-to-operate in an arid environment
- Energy transition — solar integration at pumping stations signals a trajectory toward reduced diesel dependency
- Emergency preparedness — structured HSE drills covering hazmat response, confined-space rescue, and vehicle extraction align with Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 (WA) obligations
